THE LOCALE
What it's like to live in Pine Island
Pine Island is a hamlet within the Town of Warwick and the largest community in the Black Dirt Region — thousands of flat acres of deep, dark, extraordinarily fertile soil left behind by a glacial lake bed some 12,000 years ago. In places that soil runs 30 feet deep.
The region covers roughly 26,000 acres, the largest concentration of black dirt in the United States outside the Florida Everglades. It was drained and reclaimed in the early 1900s largely by Polish, German and Dutch immigrants, and Pine Island still carries a strong Polish heritage today.
Life here is rural and wide open — farm stands, working fields, big skies, and a genuinely tight-knit community. The area is famous for its onions (the annual Onion Harvest Festival is the hamlet's signature event), but farms now grow lettuce, carrots, sweet corn, pumpkins, potatoes and more.
