HOME/LIVING GUIDE/CHESTER
Chester
Commuter-friendly, with an artists’ village attached.
THE LOCALE
What it's like to live in Chester
Chester is the practical pick in Orange County. Sitting just off Route 17, it gives quick access to the NYS Thruway, Routes 84 and 94, and the Bear Mountain Bridge — which makes it one of the easiest places in the county to commute from, in almost any direction.
The community is really three places at once: the Village of Chester(incorporated 1892, with a traditional Main Street and a dairy and railroad heritage — it claims to be the birthplace of Philadelphia Cream Cheese), the wider Town of Chester with its subdivisions and wooded roads, and the hamlet of Sugar Loaf.
Sugar Loaf is the surprise. Founded in the 1740s as a craftsmen's waypoint on the King's Highway, it has spent the last half-century as a working artists' village — more than 30 independent studios, galleries and shops in 18th-century buildings and barns, plus the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center.
